Photography – A journey into life.

Some years back it was an unattractive profession in my part of the world, left to some old men and some not so well educated young men. By the turn of years, it has become a very attractive and lucrative profession and a lot of young and well educated people are engaged in it. Photography it is!

What caused the revolution? What made photography as a profession very attractive all of a sudden? Even just as a pastime, only few people loved it then. Now you see a lot of people around with expensive cameras going around taking pictures just for fun. What changed? What caused this revolution in photography?

However as someone who has always loved arts, pictures and anything that has to do with visuals, I decided to delve deeper into it. I have always been that guy who loved holding cameras and taking senseless and mischievous pictures. In times where I am not the custodian of the camera, I love to be captured in every click of it. I would spend long hours online, looking, downloading and commenting on pictures.

To get answers to the questions of the photography revolution and to feed my insatiable love for pictures, I decided to go into photography myself. The journey so far has been thrilling. It is not as easy as I thought it would have been. Sometimes, you think you are taking a perfect picture. The end product you get questions why you even own a camera. At other times, you are amazed at what you capture. You end up asking yourself, ‘wow! Did I take this picture?”

Gradually I am learning how photography is not merely about holding a camera and taking pictures. It is much bigger than that. I am learning how photography plays important roles in culture, education, history, socio-economic development, politics, entertainment and other spheres of life. I am getting a deeper understanding of why people will invest largely in this field and spend hours to learn about that small wonder gadget of an image capturer.

Photography to me is a favourite child of art. If art is said to be life, then photography is a child of life. Therefore as one takes a journey into photography, it could be seen as a journey of life. Interestingly, one can derive a lot of life lessons from learning how to take good pictures; the mistakes, the perseverance, the wow moments, the disappointments etc.

At this moment I declare myself a student of art/life/photography. I have started clicking my camera’s shutter button like crazy. I am sure to take 20150409-IMG_1646all kinds of senseless pictures, taking assurance in the personal belief that in art, nothing is senseless.
